An image from the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites website clearly shows the path of the latest volcanic ash plume from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano that is once again leading to the dispruption of air traffic.
Ash over Spain and Portugal caused 15 airports to close today and a number of flights from the UK were affected. As reported, northerly winds over the UK could bring ash back over Ireland and western Scotland tomorrow or later in the week.
The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) deliver weather and climate-related satellite data, images and products– 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and has a page where viewers can see the progress of the volcanic ash in an animation created from various satellite images.
As reported earlier, Eurocontrol noted ash eruptions are ongoing and the area of potential ash contamination is expanding in particular between the ground and 20,000 feet.
"As a result, during the day, the area affected by volcanic ash is expected to extend from Iceland, south to Portugal and possibly as far east as Barcelona and Marseille. Airports are closed or expected to close in northern Portugal, the north of Spain and parts of southern France," Eurocontrol said.
