Mr. Suresh Kalmadi has been a tireless champion of bringing world-class events to India and developing infrastructure that is comparable to the international standards.

As the Chairman of the CWG 2010 Bid Committee, his most recent achievement was winning the bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, The CWG 2010 have a budget of Rs 1,988 crores and promises to change the face of Delhi just like the National Games 1994 changed the face of Pune.

Winning the honor to host the CWG 2010 has cleared the path for us to now bid for hosting the Olympics in 2016. China is hosting the games in 2008, they will be held in the west in 2012, and in 2016 it is fitting that the Olympics should return to Asia. Mr. Kalmadi is the Chairman of the Olympics 2016 Bid Committee. India will also be bidding for the World Athletics Championships in 2009.

"Somewhere during 2007, the Olympic evaluation team will arrive to see the infrastructure for both World meet and the Olympics and I am sure that we have enough infrastructure at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi and small infrastructure in other cities," Kalmadi has said.

The successful organization of the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad, with Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, paved the way for India to win the bid for hosting the Commonwealth Games 2010. With sportsmen and women from over 95 Asian and Africa countries, the management and logistics of arranging the Games were immense. But the leadership of Mr. Suresh Kalamdi and Mr. Chandrababu Naidu demonstrated that we are capable of conceiving and organizing even the biggest events.

India was second only to China in the medals tally and earned 19 Golds, 32 Silver, and 29 Bronze medals for a total of 80 medals. This is reminiscent of our best ever performance in Asian Games which were held in Busan, and the Indian team won 11 Gold, 12 Silver, and 17 Bronze for a total of 40 medals - second only to China.

NATIONAL GAMES
One of the best organized National Games was the 1994 edition held in Pune of which Mr. Kalmadi was the Chariman of the Organizing Committee. Since then 4 more National Games have been held under his leadership in Banglore, Manipur, Punjab, and Hyderabd. Infrastructure of international standards woth Rs 1000 crore has been created to host these games, and the infrastructure is now being used for national and international events. The next edition of the games have been alloted to Assam.

In addition to the National Games, National Winter Games habe also been organized at Auli, Shimla, and Gulmarg. Mr. Kalmadi has focused on providing oppportunities for National Winter Games to rise to Olympic Standards.

RUN FOR YOUR COUNTRY – DELHI MARATHONS
"Run for Your Country" and "Nehru Centennary Run" was organized by Mr. Suresh Kalmadi as the Chairman of the Amateur Athletic Federation of India (which since April 01, 2004 has dropped the Amateur from its name) with unprecedented mass participation.

"Run for your Country" also called "Freedom Run" was one of the world's largest marathon in which over half-a-million runners participated. Even the then Prime Minister of India Rajiv gandhi himself was an enthusiastic participant.

ASIAN GRAND PRIX
Mr. Kalmadi introduced the Asian Grand Prix in 2002, which has now been held twice. It started off in Hyderabad, and was also organized in Manila, Bangkok, and Colombo. It is now an annual feature.

Mr. Kalmadi started his sports career with the Pune Athletics Association. He was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the National Games in Pune in 1994, which ushered the 2nd major developmental phase of Pune infrastructural growth.

As President of the Athletics Federation of India he has organized 8 permit meets in athletics which included athletes like Carl Lewis, Sergi Bubka, Merlene Ottey, Michael Johnson, Mike Powell, Said Aouita, John Godina, Gwen Torrtenee, Flo Jo, Ibrahim Ismail, Muhammed Sulaiman, and Susanthika Jayasinghe.

As Member of Parliament in Delhi Mr Kalmadi has always worked for increased budgetary allocation for creating infrastructure, facilities, and training for sports all over the country, especially for athletics. He also fought for more sports in the Armed Forces and the Army Sports College is becoming a reality in Pune.

Mr. Kalmadi was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the National Games in Pune in 1994. They have been one of the best-conducted Games so far, and it was largely due to the political power and organizing ability of Suresh Kalmadi. It was during this time that the pride of Pune Sport’s establishment – the Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium, a sports complex spread over 62 hectares was built. It was the first stadium of its kind to be built in Maharashtra, and the facilities available here are probably the best available at one place anywhere in the country. It has since then been in regular use for the conduct of national and international events.

Since the Pune National Games in 1994 four more National Games have been organized under his leadership at Banglore, Manipur, Punjab, and Hyderabad. The next Games will be held in Assam.

The National Games are one of the biggest multi-discipline sports events conducted in the country, and involve the participation of thousands of athletes and officials. Conducting such a massive sports extravaganza calls for tremendous organizational ability, meticulous planning, top class communication systems and above all the ability to tackle emergencies quickly and effectively, cutting through red tape and bureaucratic delays.

PUNE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON
Pune International Marathon is the brainchild of Mr. Suresh Kalmadi. This is the only international marathon in India, recognized by IAAF, and has been successfully conducted 18 times. The first edition of Pune International Marathon was held on September 25, 1983.

In 1980 when Mr. Suresh Kalmadi took over as President of the Maharashtra Athletics Association, he undertook the selection trials for the Marathon team to represent the country at the Moscow Olympics. Mr. Kalmadi drew a plan and discussed the same with the then President of the Maharashtra Olympic Association Mr. Sharad Pawar. This meeting threw up a positive message and the "Run for Fitness"theme was conceptualized, and born with it was the idea of starting an International Marathon in the state.

ASIAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Asian Cross Country Championships were held in Pune on February 22, 2004, under the aegis of Asian Athletics Association, of which Mr. Suresh Kalmadi is the President. The event was held for the first time in India. Mr. Kalmadi said, "We belong to Pune, Pune belongs to us, right till the finishing line." A total of 80 athletes from 13 countries participated in the cross country held at Poona Turf Club.

As the state government teeters on the edge, opposition JD(S) and Congress have been attempting to cobble up a coalition that could take over the reins of governance.

Despite a bitter experience of coalition in the past, the two parties now seem set to negotiate anew. However, leaders of both parties remained tight-lipped, unwilling to divulge details.

Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy is believed to have played a significant role in convincing a section of the BJP MLAs to rebel against the party. Asked of his future plans, he dodged a question about whether his party would align with the Congress.

Pressed to answer questions about whether the state could see a coalition government, Kumaraswamy said, “Let’s not talk about hypothetical situations.

It’s hard to anticipate at this point what the options would be.” However, there is no doubt that with only 28 MLAs in the 224-member house, the JD(S) would be in no position to form a government of its own. Counselling patience, the JD(S) state president said, “Wait and see, there is surprise in store for the people of the state. The corrupt BJP government will soon come to an end.”

Pratibha murthy | BPO employee Prathibha Murthy case: Cab driver guilty, sentence on Friday

The cab driver who collected BPO employee Pratibha Murthy for work on a December night years ago has been found guilty of raping and murdering her. The judge of a fast-track court in Bangalore who has been hearing the case said he will announce the driver's sentence on Friday.

Pratibha's 80-year-old mother, a widow, sat inside court, tears rolling down her face. Later, she said, "How does he know my pain? I lost my only daughter. My family was smashed. Let him come and see my house. How much pain...."


Pratibha, who worked for a Bangalore call centre, was picked up for the night shift in December 2005 by a driver named Shivakumar. He told her that the driver assigned to her route was on leave, and that he was the replacement. He then allegedly took her to a deserted place on the outskirts of the city and raped and killed her.

The case forced the call centre industry to re-examine the security provided for women employees working on the late shift. BPOs began sending guards with cab drivers to pick up and drop women after Pratibha's death.

The traditional six day countdown to Mahasaptami starts from Mahalaya. Goddess Durga visits the earth for only four days but seven days prior to the Pujas, starts the Mahalaya. The enchanting voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra fill up the predawn hours of the day thus marking the beginning of " devipaksha " and the beginning of the count-down of Durga Puja.

Sarat in its bloom,mingled with the festive spirit of Durga Puja reaches its pitch on the day of Mahalaya. From this day starts 'Devipaksha' and marks the end of 'Pitri-paksha'. It is the day when many throng to the banks of river Ganga, clad in dhotis to offer prayers to their dead relatives and forefathers.People in the pre-dawn hours pray for their demised relatives and take holy dips in the Ganges. This ritual is known as 'Torpon'. This day bears immense significance for the Bengalis. It is according to the myths that Sree Rama hastily performed Durga Puja just before he set for Lanka to rescue Sita from Ravana.
According to Puranas, King Suratha, used to worship goddess Durga in spring. Thus Durga Puja was also known as Basanti Puja. But Rama preponed the Puja and worshiped Durga in autumn and that is why it is known as 'Akal Bodhon' or untimely worship. It was considered untimely as it is in the myths that puja was performed when the Gods and Goddesses were awake i.e.


"Uttarayan" and was not held when the Gods and Goddesses rested ie."Dakshinayan".
It was on the day of Mahalaya,the beginning of "devipaksha",the Gods and Goddesses woke up to prepare themselves for Durga Puja. Akashvani Mahalaya: In the year 1930, Mahalaya was first broadcasted over the radio in Akashvani. The programme was organised by Premankur Aatorthi, Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Nripendra Krishna Mukhopadhya and Raichand Boral. It was broadcasted live then. Later it was recorded and played. Bengal's cine star, Uttam Kumar had once recited Mahalaya while Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhya was the music director. But it was not popular among the mass and from then it has always been the voice of Birendra Kishna Bhadra enthralling the listeners in the pre-dawn hours of Mahalaya. The script was written by Bani Kumar, music was directed by Pankaj Kumar Mallik while Dijen Mukhopadhya, Manobendra Mukhopadhya (Tabo Achinta....), Sandhya Mukhopadhya, Arati Mukhopadhya, Utpala Sen, Shyamal Mitra and Supriti Ghosh (Bajlo tomar alor benu....) sang in their melodious voices.

priyadarshini mattoo Judgement | SC to pronounce verdict today 6th Oct 2010

The Supreme Court will pronounce its judgement in the 1996 Priyadarshini Mattoo rape-cum-murder case on Wednesday on the appeal filed by the convict in the case, Santosh Kumar Singh, son of a former IPS officer. A bench comprising justices HS Bedi and CK Prasad would deliver the
related stories Singh had appealed before the apex court against the October 2006 verdict of the Delhi High Court that sentenced him to death. The SC bench had reserved its judgement on July 29.

According to the prosecution, Singh had raped and murdered his junior from Delhi University’s law college in January 1996 at her residence in Vasant Kunj.

The trial court had on December 1999 acquitted Singh after holding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), prosecuting agency, had botched up the forensic evidence against the accused under the influence of the accused’s father.

The HC had on October 27, 2006 reversed the trial court decision by holding him guilty of rape and murder.

Opposing Singh’s appeal, CBI has argued in favour of the HC verdict and said that it had correctly appreciated the evidence leading to his conviction.

Allahabad high court To Announce Judgement Today | Possible outcomes of the Ayodhya case

The Ayodhya judgment due on Thursday threatens to re-ignite religious tensions when it rules whether Hindus or Muslims own land at the holy site.

Here are the possible outcomes and consequences of the suit:

* A ruling seen as pro-Hindu could damage the ruling Congress Party's relations with India's Muslims, who make up 13 percent of the population. Congress has built a reputation as a secular party in contrast to the main opposition, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

* A ruling seen as pro-Muslim would raise the possibility of violence from Hindu fanatics as it would threaten Hindu groups at the site with eviction. It could also help boost the BJP, which rode to national prominence on the Ayodhya row in the 1990s.

* A split or inconclusive ruling is forecast by many, as the court must assess at least 20 different issues including whether the disputed spot was the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram. Home minister P. Chidambaram said Wednesday that "it would be very difficult for a trained lawyer to come to the conclusion that one side has won and one side has lost".

* The government hopes that whatever the ruling, religious tolerance has improved in India since 1992. The BJP itself has appealed for calm, with a spokesman on Wednesday saying that "people should hear the verdict with patience and accept it with patience".

* Hindu or Muslim groups who feel aggrieved at any elements of the court decision are likely to launch a Supreme Court appeal. The glacial pace of legal proceedings in India looks set to ensure that the Ayodhya case will be subject to courtroom arguments from many years to come.
