The National Film Awards is the most prominent film award ceremony in India. Established in 1954, it is administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973.

Every year, a national panel appointed by the government selects the winning entry, and the award ceremony is held in New Delhi, where the President of India gives away the awards. This is followed by the inauguration of the National Film Festival, where the award-winning films are screened for the public. Declared for films produced in the previous year across the country, they hold the distinction of awarding merit to the best of Indian cinema overall, as well as presenting awards for the best films in each region and language of the country.

The 57th National Film Awards is presented to the best of Indian Cinema released during the year 2009. The awards are yet to be announced.

Will Amitabh Bachchan catch up with Malayalam megastar Mammootty and South Indian superstar Kamal Haasan?

Mammootty and Kamal Haasan have won the national award for best actor thrice and Bachchan twice in his career.

Kamal Haasan had won the award for the Tamil film "Moonampirai" in 1983, for "Nayakan" in 1988 and for "Indian" in 1997.

Mammootty won the prestigious award in 1990 for his roles in "Mathilukal" and "Oru Vadakan Veeragatha", in 1994 for "Ponthanmada" and "Vidheyan" and in 1999 for "Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar".

Big B won the award in 1991 for "Agnipath" and in 2006 for "Hum".

So, will Mammootty become the first to win best actor award for a record fourth time?

Best Actress award went in favour of Ananya Chatterjee for her role in Abohomaan.

Best Sound Engineer: Oscar winner Resul Pookutty
Best Supporting role (Male): Farooq Sheikh for the film Lahore
Best Supporting role (Female): Arundhati Naag for the film Paa
Best Playback singer (Male): Rupam Islam
Best Playback singer (Female): Niranjana Sarkar (Housefull)
Best Music: Dev D
Best lyrics: Swananad Kirkirey for the film 3 Idiots
Best Music Director: Amit Trivedi for the film Dev D
Best Child Film : Ottani Pati and Kesu
Best Child actor: Jiva and Anba Karasu
Best Music score: Illyaraza for Pazhassi Raja
Best Choreography: K Shivashankar for film Magadhira
