There’s irony and several teachable moments regarding President Barack Obama and the federal government after Obama’s Ramadan iftar dinner speech at the White House. Obama gave the speech on a Friday the 13th, a date which links back to ancient times, of day of fear, superstition, and foreboding. In his speech, Obama backed the building of the mosque near Ground Zero while mentioning “the deeply traumatic event for our country”, “lower Manhattan”, the 911 attack, and the “pain and experience of suffering of those who lost ones is just unimaginable”. Even more unimaginable the events surrounding the building of the memorial including the discovery of the makeshift memorial, a weatherproof tent set up next to the New York Coroner’s office which was set on fire last November. Obama said “Ground Zero is hallowed ground”. Amazing, isn’t it, Obama would weigh in the building of a mosque, a very short term controversy when you compare this event to the building of a memorial at Ground Zero. The “sensitivities” of a religion wanting to build a mosque, versus the lack of sensitivity towards Ground Zero, a virtual hole in the ground construction site for the past nine years. A site of the largest attack against American citizens on American soil.
