Aug 31 (PTI) Floods caused by heavy rains in the last few days claimed five more lives in Uttar Pradesh as rivers Ganges and Yamuna continued to swell in many districts. While two children drowned in separate incidents in Barabanki district, where several villages have been inundated due to a breach in Charsari embankment, three deaths were reported from different parts of Sitapur district, 90 kms from here, they said.
In Barabanki, 29 kms east of Lucknow, more than two dozen villages have been hit by floods caused by one-and-a-half kilometre breach in Charsari embankment in Parsawal village on Gond border. "A team of rapid response team has arrived from Delhi and were involved in relief and rescue work," district magistrate Vikas Gothalwal said.
According to Central Water Commission, river Ganges was still rising at Varanasi, Ghazipur, Mirzapur and Ballia. The river was flowing almost at the danger mark at Kannauj, Ankinghat, Kanpur and Dalmau (Raebareli), it said.
Ramganga, which has already played havoc in a number of districts, was flowing above danger mark at Dabri in Shahjahanpur. Similarly, Yamuna was flowing above danger mark at Prayag Ghat in Mathura and was swelling at Etawah and Auraiya, whereas Sharda was flowing above danger mark at Palliakalan and Shardanagar, both in Lakhimpur district.
Similarly, Ghaghara was also flowing above danger mark at Elgin Bridge (Barabanki), Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia and Rapti was flowing above danger mark at Birdghat and Rigauli in Gorakhpur.
