An overflowing Yamuna and relentless rains added to the city's woes on Wednesday. The river flowing well above the danger mark now threatens to inundate more low lying areas along its banks.
At 3 am, the Yamuna was flowing at 205.78 metre, almost a metre above the danger level 204.83 metre. The river water has started entering newer areas of the city.
On Wednesday morning, river water reached the Tibetan monastery market and was barely a few kilometres from the Ring Road. Areas like Usmanpur, ITO, Sonia Vihar, Nigambodh Ghat are likely to get flooded if the water level rises further.
As a precautionary measure, the low-lying areas are being evacuated. Earlier hundreds of people had been evacuated from the areas located in the riverbed were flooded.
If the water level rises further then the market will have to be shut. This might cause major losses to the shopkeepers. They stand to lose their goods and business in the coming days.
Meanwhile, fresh rain on Wednesday morning caused severe traffic snarls on all the arterial roads. Office goers had a tough time negotiating the maddening traffic on all major stretches.
