SS Rajamouli, known for his envious track record of giving series of blockbusters, proved that he is a master craftsman of the celluloid entertainment. The secret of his success seems to be his open mind in not assuring any excitement to the audiences, besides daringly revealing the storyline during the very beginning of the film shoot. He applied the same yardstick to his latest release Maryada Ramanna, starring Sunil like an odd man out, but settling the score with a meaningful finish.
Rayalaseema, the notorious land of faction feuds, is the backdrop. The brother of a dreaded factionist Ramineedu (played by debut artiste Nagineedu) gets killed in a faction fight. From that day onwards, Ramineedu and his two other brothers (played by Supreeth and Venugopal) wait for the opportunity to take revenge on the killer and his family.
The much-awaited chance arrives at the doorsteps of the revenge-seekers after 28 years. Ramu, who had lost his parents, lives in Hyderabad all alone, with bad luck always in the rear in whatever he does. He desperately wants to buy an autorikshaw, for which he badly needs money. At this pathetic juncture, a ray of hope dawns on him through a message that he has a five acre land left in Rayalaseema by his dead father. Immediately, he sets off to dispose the bit of land to buy an auto. A twist of love-adventure is attached to the hero in the land of faction fights. His girl is Aparna (Saloni), naturally the daughter of the fervid Ramineedu. After all, Ramu is the son of the one who had murdered Ramineedu’s brother. Without knowing this, he gets the hospitality of his dad’s rivals. After a while, the truth is out. It is time for hospitality to turn into hostility. What’s next? It forms the crux of the film.
Sunil would no longer look like a comedy hero. His characterization is treated with a lot of seriousness and there is a possibility that Sunil might even turn into a regular hero. His dances are simply superb, though they are not that impressive as the numbers were in his previous flick Andala Ramudu.
Saloni is beautiful and holds natural sex appeal. It is unfortunate that her talents remained undetected for the last three years, but for Rajamouli, now. She performed with perfection all through the movie. Definitely, she awaits a bright future hereafter, it seems.
Debutant Nagineedu fitted well into the shoes of villainy. The other two guys, Supreeth and Venugopal, too showed maturity, completely away from being novices. Others, Rao Ramesh, Jayavani, Sandhya and others too gave standard performance. Brahmaji made his presence felt in an impressive way. Ravi Teja’s voiceover for the Cycle is a commercial element worth to note.
Maryada Ramanna has a judicious mix of fun, thrill and suspense. The audience will have no option but to accept that Rajamouli had cast the right pair for his adventure into the world of comedy, of course for the first time. The film often slips into the realm of expectations of the audiences, but the saving grace is that the factor of boredom is totally missing. Kudos to Rajamouli!
The story has all novelty, but expectation factor marred the overall effect. Music and songs are nice. Music by MM Keeravani is an asset. The song (rendered by Raghu Kunche) … Raye Raye Saloni… is eye-catching. Dialogues are neat and the film is completely away from vulgarity, thus proving a point for the family crowds. Direction and screenplay are put to a right blend. Cinematography is outstanding. Editing is fine. Costumes and art department are plus points to the film. The comedy is situational and the audience will not find it drabbing anywhere.
Verdict: Worth a watch.
