HOT VOLCANIC ASH CLOUD UK AIRPORTS AND FLIGHTS 2010 | Volcanic ash grounds more Newcastle Airport flights

A FRESH plume of volcanic ash that brought new flight disruptions to the North East at the weekend could continue causing problems today. Yesterday budget airline Easyjet cancelled flights from Newcastle Airport to Rome and Paris after streams of ash snaked through skies over the continent.

The airline said it expected problems to continue into today.
Yesterday, Newcastle Airport remained open to inbound and outbound flights, but a Viking flight to Verona was cancelled and passengers were instead transferred by bus to fly from Bristol. A notice on Newcastle Airport’s website yesterday said: “Following the latest updates from Eurocontrol, the CAA and NATS, we confirm that Newcastle Airport remains open for inbound and outbound flights.
 



“Some airports in northern Spain, Portugal and Italy, France, western Ireland and northern Scotland, are currently being affected by the higher density ash cloud. “The vast majority of flights are expected to operate as normal, but today’s easyJet flights to and from Paris and Rome have been cancelled.”

Easyjet also yesterday confirmed on its website that its flights operating to and from northern Scotland, southern Germany, France, Switzerland, northern Spain, northern Portugal and northern Italy, had all been affected. London’s Heathrow Airport reporting delays of 10 to 15 minutes but disruption to European services was said to be minimal. Yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, which is an easyJet hub, dozens of flights to Britain, Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Hungary were cancelled, while Zurich airport listed flights to Washington, Dublin and Porto as cancelled.
